About Sunrise

Gardening Class

We are a Charlotte Mason–inspired homeschool group located in Mission Viejo, California where children can grow in mind, body, and spirit, build lasting friendships, and discover the beauty in the world around them.

We offer multi-grade, in-person enrichment classes for students in grades 1–6. Each class meets for four hours and includes a variety of subjects that are best experienced in a group setting. Our schedule also allows time for lunch and plenty of creative play, giving students the chance to learn as well as grow socially.

Current Schedule:

Mondays 10:00 - 2:00

*Additional days will be added soon, email us for more information.

Our Educational Offerings

Nature Study

Nature study encourages children to observe and delight in the beauty of the world right in their own backyard. Students will take the time to notice plants, animals, birds, weather, and seasonal changes, then record their discoveries through drawing, journaling, and discussion.

Fine Art Picture Study

Picture study invites children to slow down and spend time with works of fine art. Through careful observation, guided discussion and engaging activities, children learn to connect with artists and their stories, making fine art both accessible and inspiring.

Each day at Sunrise is filled with beauty and discovery. Within each four-hour session, students engage in a thoughtful blend of subjects and activities that nourish both mind and heart.

Literature + Poetry

During literature study, students explore a rich variety of poetry, Shakespeare, fables, folktales, fairytales, and other short stories. Through copywork and narration, children develop attention, memory, handwriting and communication skills while savoring the beauty of well-crafted language.

Geography + Culture Study

In geography and culture study, students explore the people, places, and traditions that make our world diverse and fascinating. Through maps, stories, art, and cultural activities, children learn to about the landscape, daily life and customs around the globe.

Baking + Bread Making

In our baking and bread making sessions, students experience the joy of creating with their hands while learning patience and care. From measuring ingredients to kneading dough and watching it rise, children discover the beauty in each step of the process. These activities nurture focus and give a tangible sense of accomplishment as they enjoy the fruits of their work together.

Arts + Crafts

Our art and craft time is inspired by Charlotte Mason’s “handicraft,” which emphasizes skill and attention to detail, but at Sunrise, we take a little liberty and embrace imaginative expression and often focus on the joy of the process rather than a perfect outcome. These sessions give students the chance to be creative, thoughtful, and experiment with a wide variety of mediums.

Gardening

Our gardening time gives children a hands-on way to connect with the rhythms of nature. As they plant seeds, tend growing plants, and watch the stages of growth, students experience the joy of nurturing life while also learning patience and responsibility.

Music Study

In music study, students are introduced to the lives and works of classical composers. By listening closely and learning the stories behind the music, children develop deeper appreciation for the beauty and power of classical music. â€‹

What if I'm not using Charlotte Mason in my other homeschooling curriculum?

Classes are are held weekly and you are registering for a semester at a time. The first semester is from September - December and the second semester is from January - May.

Can I use Charter Funds?

Do I have to sign up for the whole year?

Preferably, students will attend both semesters which last the entire school year. This consistency allows for students to build lasting friendships and connection, which is one of the main goals of Sunrise. That said, we understand that one of the best parts of homeschooling is doing what is best for your family and we understand if you need to adjust your schedule halfway through the year.

Do you provide a free trial?

Yes! Let us know when you'd like your student to join us and we will add them to our schedule. We love prospective students!

Likewise, at the beginning of each school year we hold an open house for families to come and meet each other as well as some of our teachers. Please join our mailing list to stay updated on that date.

Do the teachers rotate?

Every week is a little bit different! Typically the group leader will teach most of the subjects with a guest teacher will lead a special project for one of the four hours. Parents are provided a monthly schedule that will list the teachers for each day and what we will be doing during each class.

Are parents welcome to stay?

Yes! Parents can drop off or stay and hang out! Likewise, if you'd like to be a guest teacher for any of our subjects, let us know!
